Priapism (erection pain and Residential)



Priapism is usually a painful erection and settled but not related to sexual arousal or gratification.

CAUSE
Priapism may appear in all age groups, including newborns.
Priapism in kids are generally present in patients with leukemia. White blood cells clog or block the flow of blood on the penis, causing priapism.
Children who are from sickle cell disease could also experience priapism.
Other reasons for priapism in youngsters is trauma, either without treatment or for the penis below the penis area (perineum) and back injury.

In older adults, the reason priapism might be known or may not.
One reason is sickle cell disease (30% of cases). Reported that 42% of adults who are from sickle cell disease and 64% of children that are suffering from sickle cell disease, will ultimately experience priapism.
Thrombus may also cause priapism.

The most prevalent reason behind priapism in adults is injected drugs:
- Drug psychosis (torazin, chlorpromazine)
- Antihypertensive (prazosin)
- Marijuana
- Drugs used to treat impotence
- Anticoagulants
- Cocaine
- Corticosteroids
- Tolbutamide
- Trazodon
Other causes are:
- Cancer which includes infiltrated in to the penis and blocking the blood circulation from the penis
- Infection on the genitals
-Abnormalities in veins or nerves inside the erectile tissue.

SYMPTOMS
Symptoms include pain that comes about with erection without sexual stimulation which last for 4 hours or even more.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis will be based upon symptoms.

Examination of the blood from the blood gases obtained from the penis could give clues just how long priapism has lasted and severity of damages which includes occurred.

TREATMENT
Treatment depends on the source:
# If the cause is drugs, then your drug is stopped immediately
# When the cause is nerve damage, given an anesthetic to the spinal
# If your cause is really a blood clot, surgery to get rid of a grume or bypass to make circulation of the penis back to normal.

In many instances carried excessive bloodletting on the penis that has a needle (aspiration) and clear the blood vessels which has a number of liquids to throw a clot or other blockage.

If priapism lasted less than 4 hours is usually awarded decongestant (including pseudoephedrine and terbutaline), which sticks to reducing the the circulation of blood towards penis.
After granting a new decongestant done aspiration.

If erection sets out to repeat, may be given vasoactive drugs, such as epinephrine, which then causes shrinkage of arteries and forestall the recurrence of priapism.
